CHART ANALYSIS

This chart shows even tracks before their release!

Exciting stuff this week: the highest new entry is not even officially released on streaming yet when I write this!

This Friday, Finnish singer Alma released a mixtape called Heavy Rules (Universal). The first single from that collection is called Dance For Me, featuring Danish singer , which premiered on Annie Mac’s BBC1 Radio show as ‘Hottest Record’. This high profile pre-release airplay of the electro-pop song was enough to make it this week’s highest new entry at #37, as one of the fourteen newbies this week.

If you think last week’s number #96, Irish act Tadgh with Who Do You Think You Are (self-released), was a fluke, entering through airplay in Spain before its release, think again. The monitoring system for the European Border Breakers Chart is fine-tuned. So hipsters, beware, check this chart first!

Much hyped British indie act Superorganism release their eponymous debut album this Friday. While still charting with Everybody Wants To Be Famous at #6, and Something For Your M.I.N.D. at #44, they see even a third entry appear at #42: Reflections On The Screen (all Domino). This so-called ‘instant gratification’ track for everyone who bought the digital album in advance already gets airplay in twelve countries outside their home country Great Britain.

More exciting stuff entering this week: for instance, at #46 Danish producer Emil Wilk enters with Slow Emotions as M.I.L.K.(Universal) via Norway. He combines live instrumentation with electronic dance pop. More electronics at #49 where French duo The Blaze comes in with Heaven (Sony) through plays in Denmark, Great Britain and Sweden. If you have the chance, please check the cinematic video for this song, which shows an idyllic scene of a community of friends and family. Three notches lower at #52, a lush ballad appears by British singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, who teamed up with Colombian-Canadian chanteuse Jessie Reyez: Rush (Universal) gets support in Germany and Finland. And at #62, the Dutch language is no hindrance for French listeners as Nafthaly Ramona enters with her urban track Merry (Sony). The Dutch video blogger and DJ is singing in slang about a ‘merry’, meaning a car from the Mercedes-Benz brand…

And then… applause for the first Lithuanian entry in this chart ever! At #78 we welcome Severija with Zu Asche Zu Staub (BMG), meaning ‘forget it’. Severija Janušauskaitė is an internationally renowned Lithuanian actress and singer with a low pitched voice. The song appears as the main theme in the to date most expensive German TV series ‘Babylon Berlin’, in which she appears as a cabaret singer during the Weimar republic period in the 1920’s. The airplay comes from Germany, Spain, Poland and Slovakia.

A couple of funky releases now. At #79 French soulful rock band Theo Lawrence & The Hearts debuts with Never Let It Go (BMG). The Paris band crosses over to Sweden and Luxembourg. At #80, British singer Youngr samples the Michael McDonnaldclassic I Keep Forgetting, which also proved a hit for Warren G and Nate Dogg in the 90s on their song Regulate. This version from the son of Kid Creole, Remember (Universal) is picked up in Finland, Latvia and The Netherlands. And at #86 British electronic duo Hazers enters with Drive (Warner) via Germany.

What’s left is the catchy pop of German chanteuse Kim Petras at #87, whose Heart To Break (Bunhead) is liked in the Czech Republic, Spain, Great Britain and Sweden. She already worked with British singer Charli XCX and American producer Dr. Luke. At #88, British classical cello player Sheku Kanneh-Mason comes in with Sardana (Decca) through French airplay, although the title refers to a type of circle dance typical of Catalan culture. Irish hiphop is en vogue at the moment, just think of the success of Reijjie Snow, so now Dublin trio Hare Squead enters with Flowers (Sony), thanks to Sweden. And the British dreams for Amsterdam based indie popper Pip Blom continue: her third hit in this chart, I Think I’m In Love (self-released), enters at #99. Her dreams are quite big, and although the ratio is 100 to 1 in chart points at the moment, she wishes to dethrone Liam Payne, the current number 1 with For You (Universal). Let’s see what next week brings!

ESNS to focus on Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2019

Every year ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) highlights the very best emerging acts from a different country, showcasing the diversity of musical talent across Europe. In close cooperation with Pohoda Festival CEO Michal Kašcák and Márton Náray, Director of Sound Czech / Czech Music Office, ESNS is proud to announce its first ever dual-country focus on the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 2019.

ESNS booker Robert Meijerink comments,
“We are keen to showcase the unique, high-quality music from these two neighbors. Although two of the youngest countries in Europe, they both have diverse and growing music scenes, a great history and lots of amazing music to be discovered.”

Coordinator of the ESNS conference Ruud Berends is particularly excited to focus on these two countries, both from an historic perspective and because this focus is in many ways the culmination of what ESNS achieved with its partners and friends in the CEE countries between 2011 and 2016 through the CEETEP programme. “I am confident that this will be a remarkable focus, especially with CR / Radio Wave and Radio_FM, Sound Czech / Czech Music Office and the ETEP festivals Colours of Ostrava, Metronome Festival, Rock for People, United Islands of Prague (Czech Republic) and Pohoda (Slovakia) on board.”

Director of the Czech Sound music office Márton Náray comments that the music scene in the Czech Republic has grown tremendously over the past five to ten years, with over 500 summer festivals, a booming club scene and dozens of great upcoming musical talents. “We are excited about the opportunity to show European professionals how much we have to offer. I think it is the perfect moment to do that.”

CEO and booker of Pohoda Festival Michal Kašcák adds that this opportunity is perfectly timed. “It is great to be a music fan in Slovakia. The whole world knows Metallica, PJ Harvey and The Sex Pistols. And we are lucky enough to know Cad, Jana Kirschner and The Wilderness. But don’t worry – thanks to the Czech-Slovakian focus at ESNS 2019, we will be sharing our hidden treasures with music lovers around the world. They deserve it!”

Tickets
Registrations for ESNS 2019, which takes place from January 16 – 19, 2019 are now available at a super early bird rate of € 260,- through our website: www.esns.nl

EUROSONIC NOORDERSLAG 2018 SUCCESSFULLY BREAKING BORDERS IN EUROPEAN MUSIC

De meest genoemde acts waren: IAMDDB (gb), Zeal & Ardor (ch), Meute (de), Superorganism (gb), Jacob Banks (gb), Tamino (be), Agar Agar (fr) and Altin Gun (nl).

Conferenties

Awards

Andere Popprijswinnaars tot nu toe zijn Mathilde Santing (1986), The Nits (1987), Claw Boys Claw (1988), Herman Brood (1989), Urban Dance Squad (1990), The Ex (1991), The Scene (1992), Bettie Serveert (1993), 2 Unlimited (1994), Osdorp Posse (1995), Eboman (1996), Marco Borsato (1997), Junkie XL (1998), Postmen (1999), Arling & Cameron (2000), Anouk (2001), Tiësto (2002), Bløf (2003), Ali B (2004), Within Temptation (2005), Spinvis (2006), Armin van Buuren (2007), De Dijk (2008), Kyteman’s Hiphop Orkest (2009), Caro Emerald (2010), Jeugd van Tegenwoordig (2011), Racoon (2012), The Opposites (2013), The Common Linnets (2014) en New Wave (2015).

KRISTIAN KOSTOV WINS PUBLIC CHOICE AWARD

The winners of the 2018 European Border Breakers Awards (the ‘EBBA’), the European music awards for emerging artists, were honoured this evening at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival in the Dutch city of Groningen. Kristian Kostov came out as the big winner of the evening, taking away the ‘Public Choice Award’ after an overwhelming number of online voters chose him.

Kostov, known for the hits Beautiful Mess and The One (I Need You), has been singing since the age of 6, first in the group Neposedy, and after 2011 as a solo artist. He finished as runner-up in X Factor Bulgaria, the country which he represented in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017. His voice earned him comparisons to singers like James Arthur, Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran. Kristian Kostov takes over from last year’s winner Dua Lipa.

The EBBA show also featured outstanding performances by the following EBBA 2018 winners: Alice Merton, Alma, Blanche, Kristian Kostov, Off Bloom, Sigrid, Skott and Youngr. Salvador Sobral couldn’t attend the show due to his health condition, therefore his manager accepted the award on his behalf.

Over the coming year the EBBA TV show will be broadcast by several European public channels. Highlights of the show can be watched through the EBBA’s Youtube channel.

THIS IS HOW DENMARK BLOOMS! & HIGHLIGHT ON PHLAKE

An overview of Danish acts at ESNS 2018, brought to you by Casper Bach Hegstrup (P6 BEAT, DR) and Carsten Holm (Programmer, Digital Radio, DR) & Danish EBU station P3 presents Phlake, by Mathias Buch Jensen (Music Editor, P3, DR)

This Is How Denmark Blooms!
An overview of Danish acts at ESNS 2018

Music from our small country in the North has been positively blooming these last few years. And while it may well be the spring of Danish music and culture as far as we’re concerned, how come there’s such a huge interest elsewhere in the ‘Sound of Denmark’ right now?

For decades, young, talented musicians have broken out of the Danish scene and crossed borders. They may have been few in number, but acts and musicians like Michael Learns to Rock, Pretty Maids and Lars Ulrich of Metallica had a huge impact on music fans around the world as well as at home. And local ambitions grew massively when The Raveonettes and Mew secured major record deals in the UK and US. Then, following the success of MØ, Lukas Graham and Volbeat, the majority of Danish artists believe that the world is potentially their musical playground.

Ambitions go hand in hand with creativity and artistic freedom, and the lineup for Denmark Blooms at Eurosonic displays a huge variety of genres and styles. All the acts deliver highly professional performances and all could well be the next artist to leave Danish soil and explore the world and its venues.

Kicking in the door with pure pop for the masses we find Phlake and Scarlet Pleasure – both bands have toured extensively and already thrilled tens of thousands of spectators at festivals. Rising stars are The EBBA award-winning Copenhagen trio Off Bloom and the singer Soleima who won the prestigious ‘P3 Talent’ award at ‘P3 Gold’ (Danish Broadcast Corporations, P3). Vera is a talented producer who has worked together with Mø on several projects, and whose ep is on the top list of NME end of the year’s list.

If something like a ‘blue Nordic tune’ exists, then it can be found in acts like Goss, who inject melancholy into their pop, and School of X, founded by drummer Rasmus Littauer who tours the world with MØ when he’s not fronting his own band.

The singer Ellis May never leaves a good melody behind in her universe of fragile, dark and doomy songwriting, and IamJJ has toured Germany intensively since a successful performance at Reeperbahn Festival in 2016.

Jenny Rossander aka Lydmor (Mother of Sound) is a one-woman army. For the last five years, she has played everywhere from huge festivals to people’s living rooms across Europe on her never-ending ‘Trust Tour’ where private individuals could book a concert of her emotional pop songs – giving shelter and food as payment. It was a stunning live-studio performance from Maximillian of the song ‘Feelings’ that made things go extremely quickly for the young singer, his rich voice represents the best of R&B, pop and soul.

Meanwhile, and flying under the pop radar, several acts from the underground movement have already had quite an impact in the international scene. Punk act Iceage, with their roaring energy and high intensity are a must-see, and Pardans (Ballroom dancing) is a six-piece living in a vertiginous, self-created universe that has now gotten the attention of BBC Radio 1.

Svin (pig) take noisy jazz and avant-garde rock to the next level with their explosive live performances. Displaying a total dedication to old school death metal. Baest will deliver the ultimate death metal fest when the young Aarhus-band hit the stage, and also from Aarhus come the three young women of Velvet Volume, giving a classy lesson in classic rock from the 60’s and onwards, played LOUD!!!!

On the dreamy and deeply emotional side of life, three artists offer food for thought. Originally a pianist, August Rosenbaum makes sonic landscapes and has established himself as an inventive and original producer on his latest album ‘Vista’ (2017). Amalie Bruun is the artist hiding behind the name Myrkur (‘dark’ in Icelandic). Not only one of the few women in the world of metal, she also gives several alternatives takes on the black metal scene creating great art and controversy at the same time. Myrkur’s show at Eurosonic will be a special performance including folk songs (folkesange).

For a more atmospheric and classical touch check out We Like We, take a deep breath and dive into the wonderful and enchanting landscapes of this four-piece combo of strings, percussion, and voice.

Meeting on the dance floor is always the best way to end a long and fun-packed day, and three acts know how to party like there’s no tomorrow. The production collective Av Av Av (Ouch Ouch Ouch) mix electronic tunes and their own style into a massive party, as does Snavs (dirt) who already makes US crowds moved to his unstoppable EDM and is now taking over Europe.

Last but not least – a group who have transformed themselves from garage rock to old school crispy funk and soul, a live band in the true sense of the phrase: D/troit can stir up a party in a toilet with the charming Toke Bo making moves nobody thought was possible!

More information about the Danish acts is available on MXD’s website (Music Export Denmark).

Casper Bach Hegstrup (P6 BEAT, DR) and Carsten Holm (Programmer, Digital Radio, DR)

Highlight on Phlake
Danish EBU station P3 presents Phlake

Phlake is vocalist Mads Bo and producer Jonathan Elkær. The duo have proved themselves as an act to rely on, becoming the most played Danish act on national radio, DR P3, two years in a row.

In 2015 their breakthrough single ‘Pregnant’ was picked as ‘P3’s Uundgåelige’ (Song Of The Week) and since then there’s been no looking back for the duo and their self-invented ‘Rhythm‘n’ Balls’ – a perfect description of their bass driven, groovy and catchy mix of hip hop, funk, R’n’B and pop.

Five Danish Music Awards, a performance as the opening act on the Orange Stage at this years’ Roskilde Festival and a bunch of killer hooks later, Phlake recently released their second album, ‘Weird Invitations’, giving the promise that their sexy, sugarcoated pop is still on top of the game.

EBBA17: SUMMER RECAP!

Last edition’s EBBA winners haven’t gone unnoticed this summer. In fact, it’s been a really hot summer for some of them.

Dua Lipa’s ‘New Rules’ ruled at the end of this summer and reached the top of the EBBCharts last week. Ireland’s folky Walking on Cars played at some fine ETEP festivals such as Pukkelpop and Colours of Ostrava. This summer they were happy to announce that their single ‘Speeding Cars’ reached 20 million views on Youtube.

But these hot summer days weren’t only happening on the left side of the Channel. Norwegian Alan Walker released a new hit single featuring Gavin James. His single ‘Tired’, released in May this year, is still getting a lot of airplay in 9 European countries. Just now Alan Walker published an interesting teaser indicating we should all look forward to new work from the WorldOfWalker.

One of the EBBA winners also reached Forbes’ attention this summer… with them calling Era Istrefi the Future Pop Star from Kosovo. With her follow up ‘Redrum’ and a new single featuring French Montana coming soon she seems bound for more success.

Austria’s Filous’ musical talent reached to Mat Kearny at the beginning of 2017 and together they released the song ‘Goodbye’ in February. Filous just released a new song called ‘For Love’ and this song will be featured on his to be released EP under the same title.

Keep an eye on our website to read more about the summer of the EBBA 2017 winners!
