Music moves, challenges and breaks boundaries. Music also has the ability to connect us and empower us. It gives us an opportunity to express our emotions, be proud and let go.
Children growing up in conflict areas who experience conflict and violence on a daily basis are often blocked in expressing their emotions. They feel sad, angry, anxious or helpless and see no future perspective. For them music is a powerful tool to take steps in improving their social and emotional wellbeing, their mental health.
In this session organized by ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag) and the non-prodit organization War Child (www.warchild.nl) we are going to show you ‘the power of music’. Professor of neuropsychology, Erik Scherder, connected to the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam (VU) will give a lecture on the increase of stress levels in the brains of children who experience conflict, and also on what music can do for our brains to reduce stress levels. Ernst Suur (17 years with War Child both in the field and in marketing) will tell more about the work of War Child for children in conflict and how music is the common thread in their work. Last but not least, the band Chef’Special, known for their songs ‘In Your Arms’ and ‘Amigo’ will express how the power of music has impacted them both in their personal lives as their lives as performers.
The host of this session is Vera Siemons. Vera is a radio DJ at the Dutch radio station NPO 3FM. With her own show ‘Vera On Track’ she focuses on concerts and festival culture.
