In a modern recording society where digital processing offers infinite possibilities to any musician, we forget that great gear doesn't equate to a great record. As part of a special artist in residence program organized by Beeld & Geluid, ESNS and made possible by Sena, Dutch musicians Lyckle de Jong, Kim David Bots and Mitchel van Dinther spend the week of ESNS crafting songs in one of the most unique studios in the world, Studio RE:VIVE.
Studio RE:VIVE, an initiative of Beeld & Geluid, is equipped solely with Dutch-made instruments and audio gear. It provides everything needed to experiment, compose and record, yet lacks all the conventional equipment one would expect in a contemporary recording studio.
These limitations breed creative ingenuity and challenge every musician who visits Studio RE:VIVE to think outside their bubble, to gather inspiration from different genres, examine experimental recording techniques from the past and to not adhere to any recording norm.
In this panel, moderated by Ricky Cherim aka Meetsysteem, one of the most singular voices in Dutch indie-rock we’ll unpack the music made during the residency, discuss unconventional approaches to recording and dive into some great albums made on not so great gear.
