Duo Ruut's (‘Duo Square’) music is based on the common ground by two young Estonian musicians and songwriters. Their sound ties together a single Estonian zither and two distinct voices. As they are composing on one instrument, Duo Ruut’s music is minimalist to its core, but packed with new and imaginative ideas.
They have released an awarded debut album "Tuule sõnad" (Words of the Winds) which was followed in 2021 by the internationally-acclaimed EP "Kulla kerguseks" (Golden Light).
Duo Ruut has played at festivals such as Celtic Connections, WOMEX, Trans Musicales, PIN Music Conference, Stimmen Festival, Tallinn Music Week etc. 2022 brought them from their home country to Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Serbia, Portugal, Macedonia, Sweden, Lithuania, Finland and France. Their music has been supported by international media such as MOJO, The Arts Desk, Louder than War, Full Moon, Songlines, NO RAI, BBC3, Sine FM, Folk Radio UK, RTBF Belgium, RFI, Inter France, EURadio, Radio Canal B, ERR, NTS Radio etc.
“At first it seems very minimal, but then it becomes transfixing. They have ethereal voices and slowly draw you into the world. There was a real buzz among the delegates afterwards” - Songlines
"Local twosome Duo Ruut, who double up on a single zither – it’s used as a drumkit as well as a stringed instrument – to create a band-sized sound with high-keening, folk-style harmony singing, to stirring effect" - MOJO, Ian Harrison
