ESNS: 2014
Not many people write history, but Ásgeir did. At least in his native Iceland, where this 21 year old singer-songwriter saw his debut album Dýrð í dauðaþögn shatter record sales to become the best selling Icelandic debut album ever. With a triple platinum album, he sold more records than the debut albums of fellow Icelanders The Sugarcubes, Emiliana Torrini, Björk and Sigur Rós. Impressed by the sheer quality of Ásgeirs folktronica songs, John Grant offered to translate the Icelandic lyrics (written by the 72 year old father of Ásgeir, a poet) to English and asked him as support for his UK tour. The English version of Dýrð í dauðaþögn was released in October as 'In The Silence' and saw Ásgeir tour Europe.
