Brìghde Chaimbeul grew up on the Isle of Skye, where she developed an innovative style on the Scottish smallpipes that emphasises rich textural drones and a trance-like constancy of sound. In 2018 she signed to Rough Trade’s folk imprint River Lea. Her 2019 debut album The Reeling was named one of The Quietus’ Albums Of The Year and won a BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award for its ‘fresh reading of traditional Gaelic tunes and outward-looking assimilation of influences from Cape Breton (Nova Scotia), Eastern Europe and Ireland’.
