Gem
ESNS: 2012
Mention Gem in The Netherlands and everyone knows what you are talking about. The band from Utrecht used to be known from their mixture of rock & roll, British punkpop and modern rock like The Libertines and The Strokes. Used to be, because front man Maurits Westerik chose a new path on their fourth studio album Hunters Go Hungry, released this year. It marked the return of Gem to the studios of producer Frans Hagenaars, after a one time collaboration in 2008 with Greg Haver, the Welsh producer, when they recorded . In the end Gem is as much an international band as a Dutch band after all their shows in the US, UK, Ireland and Germany. "The sound of the band changed radically: less gritty, more folk and soul, with organ, brass and acoustic guitar. In that place Westerik's Dylanesque sneer prospers", wrote Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant about Hunters Go Hungry and gave the album four out of five stars.
