Lisa Hannigan
ESNS:
2012
Plinky plonk rock, that's how Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan describes her music. But that description does not mention her extraordinary, soft voice that reaches from dreamy whispering to beautiful heights. A singing technique that is even praised by Herbie Hancock who compared it to Miles Davis' trumpet playing. Listening to the two albums by the singer from Dublin you can't imagine that Hannigan started her career in a supporting role. For years she was part of Damien Rice's band and she played an important role on his album . She was a backing vocalist on many of the songs and the lead vocalist on I Remember. Since 2007 she continued as a solo artist. This resulted in the album Sea Sew (2008) and nominations for the Irish Choice Music Prize and the Meteor Music Awards, there was even a nomination for the Mercury Prize in 2009. That's all very promising for the recently released . Hannigan continues on that album where Sea Sew ended. Just listen to O Sleep, a duet with Ray Lamontagne, after that there is no way back. The voice, the technique in combination with plinky plonk rock, irresistible.
