Matthew and the Atlas
ESNS: 2012
The sound Matthew And The Atlas make together is a woozy, day-dreaming Americana, filtered through a distinctly English folk sensibility – with singer Matthew Hegarty’s extraordinary bruised and raw vocal the glue that binds it together. That is a short description of the sound of Matthew And The Atlas. First EP To The North was recorded in 2009 during one of the coldest of winters in a candlelit studio in North London. The band returned to that same studio for second EP Kingdom of Your Own. Their first ever headline show was a sell out at The Lexington in London in April 2010, and since then they’ve toured the UK twice (once with The Shivers and once with Mumford and Sons) and played headline and support slots in some of London’s most iconic venues. Like Q Magazine wrote about To The North “A powerful and comforting piece of music that is more than impressive for a debut.”
