Niki & The Dove
ESNS: 2012
We knew them for a while and so we all knew how good the songs by Swedish duo Niki & The Dove were. We had to wait until 2012 to hear the astonishing album Instincts. And those songs never lose their sparkle. Nobody was surprised how good the sound of Niki & The Dove was on debut album Instinct. Most of the songs had been released before as single or just made the internet a better place to visit. Swedish duo Malin Dahlström and Gustaf Karlöf made quite a lot of fans in 2010 with their first two singles DJ, Ease My Mind and Under the Bridges. The Sunday Times described the songs as 'perhaps the two greatest alt-pop songs of 2010.' Niki & The Dove is one of the few bands who manage to capture the sound of the dance floor on record. And that is not the only thing they do so well. Critics claim these Swedes know how to get the atmosphere by The Knife and the adventure of Björk in their music. This years reviews of Instinct were raving. Pitchfork wrote about songs said to be "equally arresting, flitting between the sound of Fleetwood Mac, Prince, Cindy Lauper and trashy Europop. NME was more to the point: "Heck, they deserve some sort of Nobel Pop Prize."
