Dutch folk singer Sophie Straat grew up at the end of the 90’s in the former, now gentrified working-class area de Pijp. Nowadays she writes, with compagnon Wieger, about the effects of gentrification in Amsterdam. Her songs give us insight into the lives of the owner of a ‘green cargo bike’, the employee of the Zuidas (financial district) and the child that has just moved to Amsterdam North. Next to her role as performer of ‘het levenslied’ (‘Dutch folk genre about life’), Straat works as a visual artist focused on socially engaged works.
