We Cut Corners
ESNS: 2012
Too bad for the students that these two teachers didn't make it to school, although it is a joy for music fans. Irish duo Conall O’Breachain and John Duignan met at teacher training college. Although they only use guitar and drums there was no need for other band members. We Cut Corners can make songs firm as a rock with just two instruments. Songs that one time slap you in the face and at other times are beautiful miniatures. Somewhere between Burt Bacharach and Death From Above 1979. Or like the Irish Times wrote: "(they) sound like Bright Eyes after he has elbowed his way into The White Stripes." We Cut Corners even sing together. O'Breachain with a gender bending falsetto voice and Duignan with his dark voice as a counterweight. The minimalism of the two instruments is not a limitation, as much as a virtue by pushing the harmonies to the foreground. We Cut Corners supported Joan As A Policewoman, Villagers and Two Door Cinema Club. Debut album Today I Realised I Could Go Home Backwards is ready for release. These two masters have earned their first good grades.
