Workshop - You Name It; an alternative approach to writing original music

Can coincidence lead to beautiful music? In this interactive session we will put it to the test. Using the letters of our names and the numbers that are present in the room, we create a short, new piece of music that will be played directly on piano. Freshly appointed by an independent committee, Anne-Maartje Lemereis will come to ESNS Conference as the Composer Laureate of the Netherlands (an initiative of Buma Cultuur). In 2024 and 2025, she will focus mainly on music education. Anne-Maartje: 'I want to use this broadly and make music accessible to as many people as possible. Within education, I want to focus on the creative process. Not reproducing other people's work, as happens in so many courses, but working on your own compositions.' During ESNS Conference, Anne-Maartje will introduce her programme You Name It. The ‘coincidence technique’ is a well-known and useful way of writing new music - best known from classical serialist Arnold Schönberg - that can be used in any genre to explore new, surprising ideas and open our ears to a different angle on our own material.
