Social media plays a dominant role in our society. Big tech platforms like Meta and TikTok determine what we see in our news feeds. Big tech's revenue model is paramount, and it's becoming increasingly clear that geopolitical motives play a decisive role.
The spread of disinformation, the polarizing and discriminatory effect of algorithms, the lack of transparency in moderation, and the threat of sanctions to counter European legislation are visible phenomena. Our rule of law and democracy are at stake.
Moreover, the addictive nature of social media is taking a toll on mental health, especially that of young people. The European Parliament is currently working on the Digital Fairness Act to ban addictive and misleading algorithms.
The big question is how we can rid ourselves of the disruptive mechanisms of big tech. How can we reclaim the digital domain controlled by a handful of oligarchs? How can we regain our grip on and enjoyment of social media?
There is good news! Over the past decade, federated protocols for social media have been developed. Social media where a network of providers, rather than an owner, determines what we see. This so-called Fediverse or ATmosphere offers significant opportunities for regaining autonomy and control over building and maintaining relationships with audiences. This is crucial for creatives and makers.
In her keynote address, Marleen Stikker will discuss these new possibilities for musicians and makers and demonstrate how an international movement with European roots is building a future for social media without Big Tech.
