Anna Calvi can look back upon a year filled with nominations for prizes, huge acclaim and praise for her debut album. She is the biggest thing since Patti Smith, according to Brian Eno. With her extraordinary voice and her particular type of guitar playing Anna Calvi is one to keep watching.
Nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, named as one to watch in BBC's Sound of 2011 poll, Anna Calvi had a good share of highlights in 2011. Born to an Italian father and a British mother and raised in the district of Putney in London, Calvi was exposed to lots of different music by her father at a young age. One of her first fans was Brian Eno who described her as 'the biggest thing since Patti Smith'. Her voice ranges from ominous dark to high pitched sweet. In 2010 she supported Interpol, Arctic Monkeys and Grinderman on tour. A year later she released her self titled album to huge acclaim. The album is described as 'sumptuous, seductive and a bit scary', 'a benchmark of intensity and originality' and an 'arresting, sparse and darkly captivating listen'. Her timing and passion on stage is praised by critics and listeners. In her peculiar playing of the guitar she says to try and create the sounds of other instruments through her guitar. During her show at Eurosonic 2011 she captivated the audience so that you could hear a pin drop. Anna Calvi is one of the phenomena of 2011 and one to watch for a very, very long time.
