Booking and promoting for the elite in a time of global financial turmoil post pandemic and during a war…. In the last twenty year European festivals, arena’s and venues experienced an increasing number of visitors but where also confronted with ever increasing (artists & production) costs and fees. Eventually resulting in ticket prices going up. Research has shown that the average ticket price of the top 100 shows in the US quadrupled in the last 20 years. Because competition is tough, agents keep pushing for more money. And there is no sign that it will stop in the near future. As a promoter you have two options: go along with ‘the way things are’ or duck out. Still, promoters run the risk of alienating artists’ best customers. That’s especially true as more performers arrange VIP experiences, like collectible signings and meet-and-greets, for well-heeled customers. Does this mean that we are excluding young & poor people and booking and promoting a show or festival is more and more an elitist thing? And if so, should we look in the mirror?
