Could the global network of showcase festivals do more, or be better utilised to promote international collaboration and peaceful sharing of culture?
The past 40 years has seen the rise of a global network of music and creative industry showcases. Many represent national identities and sometimes, whole continents. Some are attached to export offices, driving the exchange of culture between nations and also have political support, allowing them to straddle the public and private sectors. All though, share the common theme of cultural trade and industry merging with creatives to encourage international cooperation. The opportunity that this well established, global forum for peaceful trading of culture presents, has never been more important, but, how do we promote this outside of the echo chamber in which we work?
