For decades, music festivals have been pivotal venues for igniting societal change and fighting for freedom. Across Europe, festivals are increasingly caught in the crossfire of political and cultural tensions. As public funding becomes more closely tied to ideology, events that once stood for creativity, inclusivity, and social dialogue now face the threat of subsidy cuts, bureaucratic pressure, or open political resistance. In several countries, right-leaning governments have begun to question the value of artistic freedom, prompting festivals to justify not only their budgets but also their very existence.

Yet, in the face of these challenges, many festivals continue to thrive — not by retreating, but by doubling down on solidarity, collaboration, and shared purpose. This panel explores how festivals across Europe are finding new ways to safeguard their independence, engage their communities, and keep diverse voices on stage.
