This is a panel for adults: Over the last twenty years, the music publishing industry has undergone huge changes due to the engagement of external funding by investment firms. The accumulation of music rights and catalogues has reached new levels whilst simultaneously stimulating the awareness by the investment community for financial engagements in the live music sector.
Most recently, buzz words such as “Swiftonomics” seem to be additional appetizers while media reports about “skyrocketing ticket prices” have amplified the “lust for live” by asset managers in order to enrich their investment portfolio with the afterthought of ‘something with concerts’.
Whilst Iggy Pop's 1977 hit "Lust for Life" became an evergreen anthem, the protest movement “Occupy Wall Street” can instead be considered retrospectively as a one hit wonder. In more recent times, even former fellow protestor Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine has agreed to go on tour with Live Nation.
Anyway, we are facing a new era where the financial folks are joining the live music industry as fellow partners. What do they expect and what do they want? And fore-mostly, will big finance change the live business forever?
