MEET@AIR at the Grote Markt

Just like last year, ESNS will be putting Dutch northern talent in the spotlight during the free MEET@AIR programme. Well-known artists from Groningen, TikTok Tammo, GP uit G and Inge van Calkar, will each host one day. Artists from the Grunnsonic showcases and NOORD projects, such as Hit the North, Up North & Go!, will perform on two stages on the Grote Markt.

On Wednesday 14 January, TikTok Tammo will present Italo Hans, Lange Mannen Met Haast, Red Manta and Simon Joan. Tammo & Band will close MEET@AIR that day. GP uit G invites Jennanna, Emmz, Louis Pedro and Robine on Thursday 15 January. On the last day of Eurosonic, Friday 16 January, Fremi, Hedemann, MAYA MARIA and WadAap will perform on stage with Inge van Calkar.

40 years of ESNS

In 2026, Noorderslag will celebrate its 40th anniversary. For four decades, music lovers and professionals have been coming to Groningen to spot leading artists. ESNS is marking its anniversary with a number of projects that are open to the public.

The Grote Markt and Nieuwe Markt will host the photo exhibition Then and Now, curated by concert photographer Ben Houdijk. Since 2012, he has been capturing artists at Eurosonic and Noorderslag, often at the beginning of their careers. Ten panels show the development of 19 ESNS artists up to the big stages where they now perform. The accompanying text was written by music journalist and visitor from the very beginning, Peter van der Heide.

In ESNS Photo by Noorderlicht, three photographers from the north, Nick Helderman, Niels Meijer and Jantina Talsma, share their view of music. With portraits, concert photography, video and work for album covers and magazines, they show how they capture the scene in images.

Students from the Minerva Art Academy create new visual work using four decades of ESNS photo and video material from the Groningen Archives. The art installations of ESNS Echo can be seen at various locations throughout the city.

With an ESNS Popwalk through the city centre of Groningen, NTR, NPO 3FM and ESNS are mapping out forty years of European pop history. The audio walk, which you can do with your phone via the podwalk app podwalks.npo.nl, takes walkers past more than thirty locations with iconic stories about the festival, the artists who played there and the people who worked on it.

NOORD @ Minerva

During ESNS, Club NOORD, the clubhouse for Dutch northern pop culture at Minerva Art Academy, will be open to everyone free of charge. Together with artists, festivals, pop organisations and educational institutions, NOORD, ESNS and Minerva will host an official ESNS stage where new local talent will present themselves to the public. The line-up for Club NOORD 2026 consists of: Alexander Moto, Bliss, døtre, Dubbel Glas, Helen Jewett, Jelle Mulder, Laguna, LYS TIGRÉ, Redmer, S1RE, shoom and tays.

Platosonic traditionally takes place at the record store Plato in the Oude Ebbingestraat. This in-store day festival features bands and artists who are also playing at ESNS. Platosonic is free to attend from Thursday 15 January to Saturday 17 January 2026. The artists will be announced shortly.

ESNS Art

In addition to the photo exhibition Then and Now, ESNS Echo and ESNS Photo in Noorderlicht, there is even more visual art to be seen in the city as part of ESNS Art. Together with Kunstpunt Groningen, ESNS is presenting a temporary artwork by Aernout Mik on the Grote Markt. Furthermore, Vera Artdivision and Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura are organising the European Poster Explosion (EPEX). The Kunstkantine is putting a series of talented Groningen artists in the spotlight, ranging from visual artists and performers to writers and creators from pop culture.

In addition, the Groninger Museum is offering ESNS ticket holders a discount on the Hip Hop Is exhibition. Finally, Galerie SIGN and NP3 are showing work that combines music, sound and performance art.

ESNS Talks x RUG in House of Connections

On Thursday 15 January, ESNS, in collaboration with researchers and students from the Master's programme in Popular Music and Sonic Cultures at the University of Groningen, is organising two talks that are open to the public. Between 5 and 6 p.m., Groningen artist Blanks (Simon de Wit) and music photographer Ben Houdijk will discuss identity and social media. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Márk Bóna, programmer of the Sziget Festival (Hungary), will talk to LGBTQIA+ artist and activist SexyTadhg (Ireland) about diversity and inclusion on European festival stages. The ESNS Talks will be in English.

The free-to-access programme of MEET@AIR and the projects organised by ESNS as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations are made possible in part by the Municipality of Groningen, the Province of Groningen, Ondernemersfonds Groningen, Stichting Beringer Hazewinkel, Emmaplein Foundation, Podiumkunst.net, Heineken and the SK&L Fund.
