"She sways with the waves of womanhood within the refuge of her own voice."
MAYA MARIA, sprouted from the sands of Terschelling, is the kind of artist who both emotionally disarms and challenges you. In her fusion of Alt-R&B and Artpop, she seeks to explore the contrast between the natural and the artificial, weaving her story, vision, and emotions into music and visuals. In this, MAYA has a gift for blending various disciplines into a captivating live experience.
MAYA has a deep sense of determination—a drive that originates from her healing process during a prolonged period of forced silence due to illness, which made her small world feel even more confined. It was during this time that the 23-year-old artist learned to sustain herself with an unending will to make her dreams come true, ensuring she will never lose sight of hope again. Embracing herself, she explores the freedom hidden in womanhood and nurtures the ambition to offer those who are willing to listen a little more space to breathe.
MAYA started to get noticed through her various performances and collaborations. This led to invitations to the Manchester-based writing camp LEC and the exclusive all-female writing camp The Heartist. In 2022, she was selected for the UpNorth talent development program. Together with producer and filmmaker Brandon McKinney, she created the interdisciplinary live show and short film *The Chaos of Becoming*, where she not only performed as a singer but also made her debut as a dancer, actress, and creative director.
During the summer of 2022, MAYA became part of the hip-hop group Wolfskers. With this group, she co-wrote an album and developed an interdisciplinary live production that resulted in 23 shows in its first year. After participating in Popronde 2023 with this alternative group, she is now ready to spread her wings with newfound experience and launch her solo career. In collaboration with Lake Woozoo, MAYA MARIA is currently working on her debut EP, set to be released in 2025.
