With the touch of one aptly chosen piano chord starts "Earth Quake”, Sleeper Nell’s debut single. This music project by singer-songwriter Pieternel Teekens will present itself to the wider public in the coming months, Earth Quake being the first of three songs. The release of the album Vanilla Town is planned for March 2025.
After a silence of more than fifteen years, the frontwoman of indiefolk duo Mama Homemade Dress returned with new music in 2022. Together with two local fellow artists Meindert Talma and Peter de Haan (Pe Daalemmer), she started a bimonthly music revue in the village of Zuidhorn, with a long line of guest artists and writers, such as Eva Waterbolk, Esther de Jong, Lammert Voos and Herman Sandman.
Inspired again, she retreated to Studio AudioGijs in early 2024, where she recorded together with producer Gijs van Veldhuizen (guitar, bass, piano, Waterbolk, Audiotransparant), Anne van Wieren (guitar, Caw Caw, Karawane, LPG), and Julian Langeler (drums).
Sleeper Nell songs are based in the alternative folk tradition, the cross-pollination with many other genres brings them into the middle of the 21st century. With her sovereign voice as the steady anchor.
Sleeper Nell is an extremely personal project. Pieternel's songs are like a sonar for her, an attempt to make sense of what is happening in her inner world and the world outside her. The lyrics of her album are about Tolstoy's late novel Surrender, about time as tortilla, expired watchdogs, the air, immigration and gender roles. In this way, her music becomes a coded sound report of her research.
