The members of Vanity Box are well-known faces in the Groningen music scene and have played in many diverse bands from the city over the past ten years. Bassist Julia Bekker and guitarists Hugo Heinen and Yorick Karseboom share vocal duties and are supported on drums by drummer Sybolt Friso. The four members started the group in January 2023 after concluding in the kelderbar of Vera that their individual plans should be combined and executed to create more music together. Since December 2023, Vanity Box has been regularly performing concerts in the North of the Netherlands, with a sold-out Vera Downstage show and an support show for Cloud Café in Vera as major highlights in 2024. Additionally, in its first year the band played at significant festivals such as WinSummerfest and Noorderzon.
In the summer of 2024, the band recorded its debut album, Good Luck, See You Friday, with producer Harmen Ridderbos (co-founder of Zeevonk Records and musician with Electropoëzie, CAW CAW, and formerly Town of Saints). With the album, Vanity Box positions itself within a long tradition of American bands influenced by The Velvet Underground, such as Yo La Tengo and Luna. At the same time, the band refers to British shoegazers like Slowdive and Ride. Good Luck, See You Friday was mastered in England by Simon Scott, drummer of Slowdive. Good Luck, See You Friday will be released on February 7, 2024 on Zeevonk Records.
