Heko Scheltema is part of the knowledge centre of the VVEM. This centre aims to ensure up to date information is available to all the members of the VVEM on topics which are relevant to their work. This includes (but is not limited to) fire-safety, crowd management, environmental issues, sustainability, health and safety and upcoming legislation. We organise workshops and give individual support where needed. In addition, we act externally to influence (national) legislation that has an impact on the event industry and create industry standards aiming to further improve the events industry. Heko also works at De Regelaar, a company providing advice and support to individual organisers and (local) government, particularly in the related fields of safety and permits. Specific tasks involve writing integrated event safety plans, assisting organisers in their permit applications and acting as event safety officer at various events in the Netherlands. Heko started working in the events industry while also studying for a law degree. In the end, the event industry turned out to be too interesting to leave. By working at the VVEM and De Regelaar, he is able to combine legal aspects with practical application in the field.
