In keeping with tradition, the Saturday of ESNS is entirely dedicated to Noorderslag. This high-profile closing day at De Oosterpoort has been regarded for decades as the barometer of Dutch pop music and is the occasion on which the prestigious Popprijs is awarded.
The first edition of Noorderslag in 1986 took the form of a ‘competition’ between Dutch and Belgian bands. The festival has since grown into the showcase event for Dutch talent. Noorderslag presents the best and latest in Dutch pop music, from up-and-coming acts to established names. At Noorderslag, the most promising Dutch acts are given the chance to showcase themselves to music lovers, the media and professionals from the music industry. Many big names took their first steps on stage at Noorderslag.
During Noorderslag, the Popprijs is awarded to the artist who has made the most significant contribution to Dutch pop music over the past year.
