Rocks, Resting

ESNS Art 2024

During the upcoming edition of ESNS, there will again be plenty to see and experience in the city. Besides music and gigs, there is also a great offer when it comes to visual art, under the name ESNS Art. Together with Kunstpunt Groningen, we will place two temporary works of art in the city centre of Groningen. You can visit Groninger Museum for the final stop of The Rolling Stones – Unzipped exhibition. Vera Artdivision and Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura will be unpacking the European Poster Explosion (EPEX), and there will be much more.

ESNS x Kunstpunt Groningen

During this edition of ESNS, be surprised by two temporary works of art in the center of Groningen. This encounter between art and music introduces you to local and national visual art talent. Michiel Teeuw presents a performance called Rocks, Resting, and a series of graphic posters by Montessori (vak)lyceum students will be displayed. The artworks are placed in the context of ESNS ART, a collaboration between Kunstpunt and ESNS, and will be displayed in the city center of Groningen from 18 to 20 January.

The official opening for both artworks will take place at de Grote Markt on Thursday January 18, from 19:00 - 19:30.

Rocks, Resting - Michiel Teeuw

Grote Markt

The performance Rocks, Resting forms an oasis of peace and quiet in the middle of the bustling festival and city centre on the Grote Markt. With the performance, artist Michiel Teeuw investigates our exhausted society. Why are so many people exhausted, and what would a rested society look like? Can we make space for other life rhythms in our high-speed society? To explore these questions, Teeuw works with all kinds of people: exhausted by illness and disability, burnouts and societal discrimination. The performance will take place intermittently on the Grote Markt during Eurosonic AIR.

Rocks, Resting, by Michiel Teeuw

Notes to the Future

Grote Markt

How does the young generation view our society of exhaustion? During workshops run by Michiel Teeuw and spoken word artist Cissy Joan, students from the Montessori (vak)lyceum reflected on this. The result is a series of typographic posters, in which they take positions on topics such as exhaustion, work pressure, mental health and the economy. New posters will be added every day during the festival.

Rocks, Resting and Notes to the Future are made possible in part by a contribution from the ELJA Foundation, Mondriaan Fonds en Kunstpunt Groningen.

Silent Struggle - Saskia Stolz

The statue Silent Struggle by artist Saskia Stolz calls attention to young people with mental problems in hopes to start the conversation around depression and suicide among young people. Suicide is the number one cause of death among people under the age of 30 in the Netherlands. The amount of suicides in Groningen is much higher than the national average.

The artist wants to draw attention to a large number of young people who walk around with feelings of depression or suicide but are afraid to talk about it, most of them fighting a silent battle. There is still a taboo around talking about depressing thoughts, even though talking and sharing the thoughts can help. Silent Struggle travels across the Netherlands to draw attention to this important issue.

The statue will be in groningen from January 15 to 29.

Het Resort x Marijke Klamer - Weaving brunch

De Sint Jan, Nieuwe Sint Jansstraat 35, Groningen

After the hectic days of ESNS, you can probably use some laid back gathering to get back to your old self for the last couple of hours. No worries. We have exactly what you need! Weaving together with a nice brunch.

Marijke Klamer created a 3-piece loom installation. A wooden frame with sculptures and stretched threads of home-spun wool and cotton that people can work on at the same time. To create one work of art together.

You don't need any experience with weaving and you can join for as long as you like, or come and watch. Marijke is there to help and guide you.

The workshop will take place on Saturday January 20 from 11.00 tot 16.00.

Hyperrealistic, hyperpop, hypermeta, hyperdata. Life as we know it is out of proportion. The cyberworld gathers our souls and urges us to keep up. Social and self-transformation are part of everyday conversations. It's all too much and sometimes we just want to dance. We're all together in this chaos of abundance, holding onto our identity as we question and liquify it.

Noorderlicht x Kim Hunnersen - Dreamscapes

Noorderlicht, Akerkhof

Kim creates imaginative landscapes with a unique signature by using photographs as a base and transforming them with collage techniques. She uses her own photographs of landscapes, travels and inspirational elements from insect books, flora and fauna, the universe and magazines. Both digitally and by hand, she merges these elements into new compositions, using materials such as ecoline, pastel and paint. After the design process, the works are screen printed by hand in small limited editions, resulting in vibrant compositions of unique layers and colors that distinguish each print.

January 18 from 12 p.m. - 8 p.m.
January 19 and 20 from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.

NP3 x Alan Ahued Naime & Babak Modarresi Rohani

NP3 | RE: Search: Gallery, Hofstraat 21, Groningen

Alan Ahued Naime – Plasticity of Sound
As part of his research Plasticity of Sound, Alan will create a site-specific sonic sculptural space in NP3 | RE:Search:Gallery. His project explores the idea to emancipate music from the element of duration, trying to reach a ‘new’ way of sonic perception. The project delves into the possibility of perceiving music as a plastic medium, played in a sculptural space that allows the audience to walk through the composition. In this way, sound (music) is always there and the listener becomes time itself along the composition.

Babak Modarresi Rohani - xāt
Babak’s collaborative multimedia project xāt seamlessly blends virtual reality (VR) with tangible haptic feedback. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) neural network generated sounds, the project orchestrates an interconnected sensory journey where sounds, visuals, and vibrations react all together. In this project Babak works together with Amirpasha Mobini Tehrani and Soroush Mohamadzadeh Azari.
